TWSDC Debate Competition

1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

In January 2022 I attended the online TWSDC Debate Competition as the second speaker of my team. Through this competition we were able to address global issues through different perspectives because we did not know if we were the proposition or the opposition side. Therefore, we had to understand different topics involving society, economy, and science through several lenses. Furthermore, for some of the debate we were not allowed to do outside research which taught us to think out of the box as individuals as well as encourage us to discuss our ideas with our teammates in order to brainstorm a well rounded argument.

This competition was the first debate competition that my team and I attended so we were considered a novice team however, we were able to qualify for the main break. Through this experience we were able to pick up different skills that the experienced debaters used so that we can apply to our own debate styles.

To conclude, through this experience I was able to meet many passionate debaters and exchange ideas on significant global issues from climate change, feminism, and politics.
